Pieridae Hires LNG Vet For Goldboro

Pieridae Energy is tapping an LNG industry veteran to lead the development of its Goldboro export terminal and get the $10-billion project back on track.

The Calgary-based junior producer and development-phase firm, led by CEO Alfred Sorensen, has hired Andy Mukherjee as senior VP for LNG (liquefied natural gas).

Mukherjee's 30-year-plus career includes modular design experience on four major LNG projects - the offshore North Field Expansion project by Qatargas, the Cameron LNG plant in Louisiana, the Inpex-Ichthys project offshore Australia and the former British Group-owned, turned Royal Dutch Shell asset, QCLNG in Queensland, Australia.

Last month, Shell took a US$8.1-billion writedown on its two main Australian LNG assets, including Queensland, reflecting the historic low commodity prices currently eroding the economics behind big LNG projects.

Mukherjee's arrival at Pieridae comes as Sorensen's team is replacing the engineering firm hired to deliver a guaranteed cost estimate for Goldboro (see 2020-08-13).

In July, Kellogg Brown & Root backed out of its deal to provide a "turnkey" estimate for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning costs for the project (see 2020-07-14).

KBR has agreed to hand over all of its EPCC work to a replacement contractor, Pieridae said earlier this month.

Despite the setback, the firm is forging ahead with development work as it continues to de-risk Goldboro.

Mukherjee's extensive experience includes working with EPCC contractors such as Bechtel, Jacobs, SNC Lavalin, Worley and Fluor, Pieridae said Wednesday.

"I have every confidence Andy will lead Goldboro LNG through the open book estimate and deliver a lump sum turnkey EPCC contract for the project, to prepare us for a positive final investment decision next year," Sorensen said in a statement.

Pieridae generated a $19.3-million operating profit from its Alberta foothills gas operation in its most recent quarter ending June 30.

The cash flow is courtesy of its $190-million acquisition last year of Shell Canada's western gas and liquids projects - assets central to Pieridae's plan to supply Goldboro with LNG.

The company's Alberta production averaged 43,791 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) per day, up from 15,368 boe/d last year.

Pieridae is forecasting 2020 net operating income to land between $70 million and $90 million, and production between 40,000 and 45,000 boe/d.

Capex is expected to ring in at $15 million, with another $16 million in Goldboro development expenses.

Shares closed at 30 cents, unchanged (52-week high/low: $1.60/12 cents).
